Government signs with Chinese company to upgrade Addu City link road

A Chinese company has been awarded the contract to redevelop and widen the link road in Addu City.

Rotime Engineering and Technology Co. Ltd. has been contracted to upgrade the link road connecting Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo, Feydhoo and Gan. The agreement was signed by Infrastructure Minister Abdullah Muthalib and Rotime Engineering Managing Director Zhou Weidong.

Under the agreement, the link road from Detour Bridge to Hithadhoo Stadium will be widened from two lanes to four lanes, and 12.3 kilometers of the existing road will be redeveloped.

Rotime Engineering has previously been awarded projects in the Maldives, including the contract to construct roads in Hulhumale' in December last year.

The Addu City link road is central to daily life for residents. However, the road has deteriorated severely, with large potholes forming across multiple sections. These conditions have caused injuries to motorists and delays in commercial freight, negatively affecting the city’s economy.

Although several repair projects have been announced over the years, no long-term solution has been achieved. Earlier this month, heavy rains caused extensive flooding along the link road, worsening its condition to the point that the Addu City Council advised residents to avoid using the road unless absolutely necessary.
