Maldives’ unique resources can make 'Blue Economy' bluer: Ambassador

The Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Kong Xianhua has affirmed that combining China’s advanced capabilities in technology, capital, and management with the Maldives’ unique resources will significantly support President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to diversify the nation's economy.

The Ambassador made these remarks while addressing a special reception held to celebrate the 77th National Day of the People’s Republic of China. The event was graced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed. Senior government ministers, Members of Parliament, and heads of diplomatic missions attended the ceremony, during which the Chinese Ambassador also joined in presenting a special song.

"A few days ago, at the National Congress of the PNC, H.E. President Dr. Muizzu emphasized that efforts should be made to further expand tourism, modernize the fisheries sector, increase agricultural production and diversify the Maldivian economy. I firmly believe that by combining China’s strengths in technology, capital and management expertise with the Maldives’ unique resources and rich talents, we can make the 'blue economy' bluer, 'green development' greener, and the 'digital future' closer than ever." Highlighting the bilateral economic partnership, the Ambassador stated.

Furthermore, the Ambassador emphasized that the major infrastructure projects being carried out in the Maldives under Chinese assistance are fully funded through China aid, without adding any burden to the Maldivian debt. In this regard, it was noted that the China-Maldives Friendship Hospital project is currently in the bidding stage, while the Malé and Villimalé Road Redevelopment Project is in the design phase. Physical work on both projects is expected to commence late this year or early next year. Additionally, project approvals for the construction of island council buildings are expected to be secured before the end of the year.

Referring to the recent incident where a drifting vessel struck the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, the Ambassador assured that technical assessments conducted by Chinese engineers confirmed the structural safety of the bridge, affirming that China will continue to assist in its maintenance alongside local engineers through grant aid.

Touching upon the tourism sector, the Ambassador stated that as of September 15 this year, over 280,000 Chinese tourists had visited the Maldives, marking a 13 percent growth. The Ambassador also announced that the "China-Maldives Investment Cooperation Forum" is scheduled to be held in October to further strengthen commercial ties and unlock investment opportunities between the two nations.
