China-funded hospital and road projects to commence early next year: Chinese Ambassador

Physical construction work on the China-Maldives Friendship Hospital and the Malé-Vilimalé Road Redevelopment Project is expected to commence late this year or early next year under full grant assistance from the Chinese government, the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives has announced.

The Ambassador made these remarks during a special reception held to celebrate the 77th National Day of the People’s Republic of China. The event was graced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed. Senior government ministers, Members of Parliament, and heads of diplomatic missions attended the ceremony, during which the Chinese Ambassador also joined in presenting a special song.

"The China-Maldives Friendship Hospital has entered the construction bidding stage. Malé and Vilimalé Road Redevelopment Project is currently in the design stage. These two projects are expected to commence construction by the end of this year or early next year. The project for the construction of Island Council buildings is progressing well and expected to secure project approval by the end of this year. All these projects are fully funded by China aid, without increasing the Maldivian debt burden." Detailing the progress of major infrastructure initiatives between the two nations, the Ambassador said.Highlighting other bilateral initiatives, the Ambassador noted that the Coconut Tree Pest Control Project on Hanimaadhoo has been successfully concluded.

The Ambassador also highlighted tourism growth, noting that over 280,000 Chinese tourists visited the Maldives as of September 15 this year, representing a 13 percent increase. Additionally, the Ambassador stated that the "China-Maldives Investment Cooperation Forum" is scheduled for October to further expand bilateral trade and investment opportunities.
