USA donates equipment for MNDF special operations

The United States government on Monday donated specialized equipment to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) to support its special operations capabilities.

U.S. Ambassador Hugo Yon formally handed over the equipment at a ceremony held at the Bandaara Barracks auditorium. Chief of Defense Force Major General Ibrahim Hilmy accepted the donation on behalf of the MNDF.

The donation includes combat diving gear, personnel equipment for the MNDF Special Forces and Special Operations Group, and other operational tools.

According to the MNDF, the equipment will enhance its capacity to conduct special operations and contribute to the overall security and safety of the Maldives.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Yon emphasized the importance of strengthening defense cooperation between the United States and the Maldives. He affirmed that the U.S. will continue to support the Maldives in future defense initiatives.

Major General Hilmy expressed gratitude for the assistance, stating that the equipment will improve the mobility and operational readiness of the MNDF. He described the donation as a significant step forward in advancing the nation’s defense capabilities.

The event was attended by senior MNDF officers and representatives from the U.S. Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (APCSS).

The Maldives has previously received defense-related donations from other countries. India has provided heavy vehicles to the military, while Turkey has donated a naval vessel.
