Monsoon rains flood Male' City again, MNDF Fire and Rescue begins draining operations

Rain has once again caused flooding in Male' City, prompting the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) to begin drainage work in several areas.

The MNDF Fire and Rescue Service is currently pumping out water from flooded roads after heavy rainfall inundated parts of the capital. Flooding is a recurring problem in Male', where even moderate rain often leads to waterlogging due to limited drainage capacity.

According to the latest weather outlook, showery conditions with occasional thundershowers are expected across parts of the country. The central and southern atolls are likely to experience heavier rainfall, consistent with the ongoing southwest monsoon.   

Winds in the southern atolls are expected to range between 5 and 15 mph, while west to northwest winds between 10 and 20 mph are forecast for the northern and central atolls. Gusts may reach 40 mph during periods of stronger convection.

Sea conditions will vary across the country, with moderately calm seas in the southern atolls and moderately strong seas in the central and northern atolls. Wave heights are expected to reach 2 to 4 feet in the southern atolls and 4 to 6 feet in the north and central atolls.

The southwest monsoon is now fully active over the Maldives. Over the past two weeks, several islands have reported flooding, coastal swells, and weather-related damage as persistent rain and rough seas continue to affect daily life.
