The daily allowance for incarcerated individuals engaged in prison work has been increased from MVR 30 to MVR 50.

This marks the first increase in 25 years, as prisoners initially received MVR 30 per day in the year 2000, with this rate remaining unchanged for the subsequent quarter-century.

Aiminath Yusreen, Media Officer for the Maldives Correctional Services, confirmed to Sun that the revised allowance has been in effect since July 16. Consequently, working prisoners now receive MVR 50 per working day.

Yusreen further elaborated that various grades of work are established within correctional facilities. The minimum standard of work, designated as Grade One, is now compensated at MVR 50. Each subsequent grade will see an increase of MVR 10, with the highest grade of work commanding a daily allowance of MVR 120.

She concluded by stating that compensation will range from MVR 50 to MVR 120, commensurate with the specific work performed by the prisoner.
