Boosting the Maldives’ food production is crucial for protecting the country from global shocks such as price fluctuations and supply chain disruptions, says President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
He made the remark in a message on X on Thursday on occasion of National Farmers’ Day.
In his message, President Muizzu said that Farmers’ Day serves as a valuable reminder of the crucial role hardworking Maldivian farmers play in ensuring national food security and diversifying the economy.
“Producing agricultural goods on our own soil using environmentally friendly methods, while reducing our reliance on imports, is inherently tied to the sovereignty of the nation,” he said.
The Maldives is a small island nation almost entirely dependent on imports, marking it particularly vulnerable to global shocks, including the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has raised fuel and fertilizer prices.
In his message, President Muizzu highlighted on the importance of boosting food production in order to weather such global shocks.
“It reminds us today of the importance of increasing food production in the Maldives to protect the country from food price fluctuations in the global market and disruptions in transportation,” he said.

He added that the expansion of the agricultural sector will also ensure that foreign currency is retained within the country, and expand employment opportunities across local communities.
President Muizzu said his administration’s primary objective is to facilitate the local cultivation and supply of select crops to meet the country’s needs, and thereby reduce the country’s heavy reliance on imports.
“In this regard, it remains my firm resolve to continuously carry out the vital work of paving a path forward for farmers to increase their profitability with the aid of modern technology,” he said.
President Muizzu concluded the message by extending his sincere congratulations and best wishes to the farmers, farming families, and all industry stakeholders.
