Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has approved a draft agreement to serve as the basis for negotiations to establish an air services agreement between the Maldives and Belarus.

President Lukashenko signed the relevant decree, Decree No. 361, last Monday. Following the decision, Belarus’s Ministry of Transport and Communications has been authorized to conduct formal negotiations with the Maldives and sign the agreement.

According to the Belarusian President’s Press Service, the agreement aims to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework governing air transport between the two countries.

The agreement will set out standards for the embarkation and disembarkation of passengers on international commercial and non-commercial flights, as well as the provision of air cargo and postal services.

Once signed and implemented, the agreement is expected to strengthen bilateral relations and create further opportunities to boost tourism in the Maldives and expand trade between the two countries.

Notably, Belarus and Maldives signed an Agreement on Mutual Exemption of Visas, on the sidelines of the High-Level Week of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, on September 23rd.
