NDMA receives 13,500 sq ft plot from Hulhumale’ to move HQ, build emergency shelter

The government has allocated a permanent land plot spanning over 13,500 square feet from Hulhumale’ Phase II for the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the main state agency responsible for providing assistance in response to natural disasters and other emergencies.

In a statement on Sunday, the NDMA announced that it has signed the land allocation agreement with the Finance Ministry, and that the plot has been officially transferred to the agency.

According to the NDMA, the plot, allocated through instructions by the President’s Office, is located in Hulhumale’ Phase II and is 13,574 square feet in size.

The NDMA states that it has lacked an appropriate permanent plot to run its operations out of since its establishment on December 30, 2018, under the Disaster Management Act. The agency is currently being run out of a rundown building located near the State Electric Company (STELCO) headquarters in Ameenee Magu, Male’ City.

According to NDMA, the land plot will house the agency’s headquarters, as well as an emergency operations center, an emergency warehouse, and a facility to house people who are temporarily displaced in emergencies.

The NDMA described the allocation of the large land plot as one of the biggest achievements in its history, one that will enhance national response to emergencies, and enhance services.
