Parents of persons with disabilities can apply for flats on their behalf starting May 20

Housing Ministry has decided to allow parents of persons with disabilities to apply for flats on their behalf.

The ministry opened applications for the ‘Aailee Boahiyaavahikan’ housing program in January, offering 15,000 land plots and 7,900 flats from the greater Male’ area.

In March, the ministry introduced a new category for flats under the scheme, designated for persons with disabilities.

The ministry announced on Sunday that parents of persons with disabilities who are unable to fill their applications on their own or are under the age of 18 may submit applications on their behalf.

However, the parents in question must be registered with the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA).

The opportunity will be open from 11:00 am May 20 to 11:59 pm June 15.

The announcement comes after Housing Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthalib wrote in a post on X in April that the government was working on amending the criteria for applications in the category designated for persons with disabilities.

He said that the changes were designed to remove barriers facing persons with disabilities in accessing housing.

The designated category is open for persons with disabilities even if they do not currently reside in Male', provided they are unable to access necessary treatment in their home island or if their family’s financial situation prevents them from living in Male'. Residents of Male' who have received treatment within the past year are also eligible to apply.
