With 252 new registrations, NSPA’s June support for persons with disabilities reaches MVR 57.9 million

NSPA disbursed MVR 57.9 million in financial assistance to persons with disabilities in June.

The National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) has disbursed MVR 57.9 million in financial assistance to persons with disabilities in June this year.

According to NSPA, 252 individuals were newly added to the National Register of Persons with Disabilities during the month. With this addition, the total number of registered persons has reached 15,652, including 9,046 males and 6,606 females.

Most individuals on the register fall under the physical disability category. A total of 4,317 people are registered with physical disabilities, including 2,366 males and 1,951 females.

Other categories on the register include persons with multiple disabilities, intellectual or developmental disabilities, psychosocial disabilities, hearing and speech disabilities, visual disabilities, autism spectrum conditions, and learning disabilities.

According to the statistics, MVR 7.07 million was spent on therapeutic services for persons with disabilities in June. A total of 253 individuals received therapy during the month, 175 males and 78 females.

The bulk of the expenditure was on three core therapies widely used to support functional development and daily living skills:

• Speech therapy: MVR 1.68 million  

• Behavior therapy: MVR 1.67 million  

• Occupational therapy: MVR 1.64 million  

The National Register of Persons with Disabilities is a key system established to ensure access to financial benefits and social protection for persons with disabilities. Its primary purpose is to identify the therapeutic and health-related services required by individuals and to support policy planning based on accurate statistics.

Registration is open to individuals certified by a medical professional as having a permanent physical, psychosocial, intellectual, or developmental disability.

Key benefits available through the register include a monthly financial allowance, assistance in obtaining assistive devices such as wheelchairs, and coverage for various therapeutic services.

The register is maintained by NSPA. To apply, individuals must submit the NSPA registration form, a medical assessment completed by a doctor, and a copy of their ID card. Documents can be submitted to NSPA, island councils, or through the online portal.
