President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) as the Chief Government Spokesperson.

The appointment was made on Wednesday, and Shareef received his letter of appointment at a ceremony held at the President’s Office. He took his oath of office before Supreme Court Justice Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim and signed the declaration of oath following the ceremony.

The appointment was made at minister level, giving the position the rank and status of a Cabinet‑level post within the President’s Office.

Shareef previously served as the Maldives’ Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates. He was recalled from the post earlier this month as part of changes to diplomatic appointments.

Mohamed Hussain Shareef has held a wide range of senior government positions over the years. He previously served as a Cabinet minister and was a member of Parliament, and has represented the Maldives abroad in several ambassadorial postings. Earlier in his career, he worked at the President’s Office as Chief Government Spokesperson from 2005 to 2007, and later as Presidential Spokesperson from 2007 to 2008. He also headed the Strategic Communications Unit at the President’s Office during that period. Most recently, he served as the Maldives’ Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.

Shareef is Maafannu Central MP Asma Rasheed's son.
