President establishes Greater Male' Transport and Mobility Office to address rising congestion

The President has set up a special office to address the problem of congestion on the roads in the city.

He established the Greater Male' Transport and Mobility Office under the authority vested in him under Article 116 of the Constitution. The office will operate under the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade.

The President’s Office said the new office was established to formulate and implement programmes, in collaboration with relevant authorities, to find an immediate solution to the increasing number of vehicles travelling on the roads in the Male' area.

In addition, the office will play a leading role in modernising the transportation system in the Male' region, developing parking facilities and other modern mobility solutions, and implementing the development of such infrastructure.

The office will be operated under the guidance of a governing board.

The President’s Office said the official correspondence number assigned to the office is 1142.

This office was established to solve the problem of congestion. There are not enough vehicles in the area. Thus, 30,000 vehicles are already operating in the city in excess of the number of vehicles registered in the city, according to a study.
