In the latest in a series of mass resignations within the incumbent administration and State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), Ali Arif, who currently serves as a Minister at the President’s Office, tendered his resignation on Monday.
The President’s Office Spokesperson Heena Waleed has confirmed to Sun that Ali Arif, Minister at the President’s Office for Presidential Affairs, resigned from his post on Monday.
However, she did not disclose the reason for his resignation.
Ali Arif is a relative of President Mohamed Muizzu. His brother, Igbal Adam, is currently serving as a Minister at the President’s official residence.
Following the results of the recent Local Council Elections and the public referendum, which indicated a significant setback for the government, President Mohamed Muizzu stated that he accepts the outcome and remains committed to implementing necessary reforms.
Since then, several senior officials, including heads of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), have been dismissed from their positions. In addition, other top executives across various companies have submitted their resignations.
Ali Arif has notably become the first ministerial-level official to resign from his post following these developments.
Early in the current administration’s term, Ali Arif drew significant public criticism over remarks viewed as controversial. The backlash was triggered by his suggestion that citizens should adapt to austerity measures by consuming simpler meals, such as Garudhiya and rice, as a means of reducing personal expenditure.
