PNC Parliamentary Group Leader and Inguraidhoo MP Ibrahim Falah says the ruling party expects to win between 800 and 900 seats in the upcoming local council and women’s development committee (WDC) elections scheduled for April.
A total of 2,962 candidates are contesting the elections.
Earlier this month, Falah said the PNC would secure 80 percent of the vote, but did not provide details at the time. Speaking at the opening of the party’s Maafannu campaign office on Monday evening, he elaborated on the party’s internal projections.
“According to our calculations, the party will win about 800 or 900 seats,” Falah said.
Falah noted that many political parties had not fielded candidates for the elections. He said only the MDP and PNC were contesting in significant numbers, while parties that “made a little noise” had not submitted candidates. A large number of independents, however, are contesting.
At the event, Falah also criticised the main opposition MDP, saying the PNC and MDP are “two very different parties” with different policies, thinking and behaviour.
Speaking before Falah, Machangolhi North MP Ibrahim Mohamed (Janab) predicted that the PNC would win 98 percent of the vote in the local council elections.
The ruling PNC has already secured 69 seats uncontested in the upcoming local council and WDC elections.
The elections will be held on April 4, with councillors elected in 226 constituencies. A total of 678 council members and 678 WDC members will be elected, 1,356 seats in total.
Political parties have intensified campaigning, with parties responding to criticism and counter‑messaging as election day approaches.
