The Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) announced on Wednesday that its neurosurgery department has successfully performed an endoscopic spine surgery – marking the first time for this minimally invasive surgery to be performed in the Maldives.

IGMH, the main government hospital located in Male’, announced the historic achievement in a post on X on Wednesday morning.

Sun has requested IGMH for details regarding the surgery, but has yet to receive it.

Endoscopic spine surgery is a minimally invasive surgery for spinal problems like slipped discs, nerve compression, or certain types of back pain.

Surgeons use a tiny endoscope - a tube with a camera and instruments -to reach the spine through a very small incision.

Compared to traditional open surgery, this method has been known to result in less pain after surgery, faster recovery time, smaller scars and less tissue damage, and reduced hospital stay.

The IGMH described the successful performance of the surgery as “another milestone for neurosurgery in the Maldives.”
