All the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) members of its parliamentary group have written to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, requesting him to instruct his ministers to cooperate with parliamentary inquiries.
The letter, signed by 12 MDP MPs, highlights the constitutional requirement for ministers and senior government officials to appear before parliament and truthfully answer questions about their responsibilities.
The letter states that despite repeated requests, ministers have not adequately responded to questions concerning their duties, the President's campaign promises, and the implementation of the current year's budget. The MDP group claims that ministers are "absolving themselves of that responsibility and obstructing the fulfillment of our constitutional duties."
The MDP parliamentary group has urged the President to hold his ministers accountable to parliament and ensure their adherence to the Constitution, reminding him of his authority to appoint, dismiss, and sanction ministers.
The opposition MDP has previously voiced concerns about not being given opportunities to summon ministers for questioning and had also moved a resolution on this issue in parliament.
