MDP to hold congress on September 19th

The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has approved a resolution to hold its congress on September 19.

The proposal to convene the congress on that date was submitted by MDP’s Chairperson, former President Mohamed Nasheed during the party's National Council meeting held on Saturday night.

The resolution to hold the congress on September 19 was approved with 52 votes in favor. A total of 63 National Council members attended the meeting.

During the session, Thimarafushi constituency president Anwar Ibrahim proposed the establishment of a dedicated committee to oversee preparations for the congress. However, the chair ruled that the party's constitution does not provide for the formation of such a committee.

The MDP last held its congress in 2022. Although subsequent attempts were made to convene another congress, the event was repeatedly postponed.

The upcoming congress is expected to be a significant gathering, with key decisions on the party's future direction, including matters related to the presidential election, anticipated to be on the agenda.
