Iruthisham: UN remains cornerstone of Maldives’ foreign policy

Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam, on Monday, stated that the United Nations remains the cornerstone of the Maldives’ foreign policy, emphasizing that, Maldives will continue to be a constructive and principled voice within the United Nations, advocating for a world order that upholds justice, promotes and protects human rights regardless of the size of the nation.

In a message marking the 61st anniversary of the Maldives’ membership in the United Nations, Minister Iruthisham said that since joining the organization on September 21, 1965, the UN has remained a vital platform for amplifying the Maldives’ voice and protecting its interests on the international stage. She also highlighted the Maldives’ significant role in shaping the global agenda for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and its leadership in establishing groups such as the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS).

In her message, the Minister said that, in line with the vision of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, small island nations should take the lead in determining the direction of their own development. She said the international community’s role should be to respect and support the decisions made by these nations. To advance this vision, she stressed the importance of fully implementing the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS (ABAS).

The Minister also called for mechanisms to be established to facilitate easier access to climate finance and urged the effective operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund. She reaffirmed that under the “Maldives First” policy, the government would continue to safeguard the country’s independence and sovereignty while strengthening relations with the international community based on equality and the core principles of the UN Charter.

The Minister concluded her message by expressing gratitude to the United Nations and other international partners for their cooperation and support over the past 61 years.
