The Maldives has called on the global community to scale up grant-based financing for climate adaptation.

The appeal was made by Dr. Salma Rasheed, the Permanent Representative of Maldives to the UN office in Geneva, as she delivered the country’s statement during the Annual Panel Discussion on the Adverse Impacts of Climate Change on Human Rights.

In her address, Salma highlighted on the disproportionate challenges faced by vulnerable countries such as the Maldives.

She called on all states to adopt the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index – the UN benchmark designed to assess structural vulnerability and resilience.

Salma also called on states to scale up grant-based adaptation finance, and ensure the full capitalization and replenishment of multilateral climate funds, including the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage.

The panel discussion was a core initiative held during the UN Human Rights Council's June sessions.
