Police have identified and fined an individual after a video circulated on social media showing a motorcycle being driven recklessly on the Sinamalé Bridge.

The video, which went viral on TikTok, shows an individual riding a black Air Blade motorcycle while sitting dangerously to one side for approximately 10 seconds before returning to an upright seated position.

In a statement on Sunday night, the Maldives Police Service said it had taken note of the footage showing reckless and negligent driving. Authorities subsequently identified the motorcycle and its rider, resulting in the vehicle being towed for 30 days. The individual’s driving license was also suspended and a fine was imposed, although the amount of the fine was not disclosed.

While the exact date of the incident and the identity of the individual have not been confirmed, the action follows similar enforcement measures. Approximately one month ago, police towed three motorcycles after a video emerged showing individuals lying flat on their seats while driving at high speed across the Sinamalé Bridge.

Reckless driving and speeding have historically contributed to serious accidents and fatalities in the Maldives, with young people frequently involved in such incidents. The latest enforcement action comes amid a serious accident in Hulhumalé Phase II on Saturday night that left a nine-year-old child in critical condition at IGMH.

According to police statistics, traffic accidents are the second-most frequently reported category of cases this year, after theft. A total of 1,984 traffic-related accidents have been reported to authorities to date.
