The PNC internal elections that concluded on Saturday demonstrate the level of public confidence in President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, said Speaker of Parliament and PNC Chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdulla.
Speaking to reporters outside the party office after the vote, Abdul Raheem said an estimated 85 percent of eligible members cast their ballots, between 32,000 and 33,000 people. He said the exact figure will be confirmed once results are announced.
Abdul Raheem described the election as the largest internal election ever conducted by a political party in Maldives.
“Today we are seeing the people’s acceptance of what the Congress government is doing, and the support for the policies of the party’s president, the country’s president,” he said.
Indirectly referring to the opposition MDP’s recent chairperson election, Abdul Raheem said Saturday’s vote proceeded peacefully, with no incidents of ballot box theft or damage.
He said more than 3,000 elected members will be chosen through the PNC’s internal elections, a number he said no other political party in Maldives has.

Earlier in the day, PNC Secretary General Moosa Fathuhee Adam told Sun that more than 40,000 people were expected to vote in the polls.
The PNC is electing more than 2,500 candidates to various constituency and steering committee posts, the largest internal election ahead of the party’s upcoming congress.
Following the elections, the PNC congress is scheduled to take place in September.
According to the Elections Commission, the ruling PNC is the largest political party in Maldives, with 74,048 registered members.
