Representatives of three former presidents - Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Mohamed Nasheed and Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom – met again this week to discuss the current political situation in the Maldives.
According to a brief statement released by the committee set up by the three presidents, the meeting took place Tuesday – marking the second meeting by the representatives.
“During the discussions, they reviewed and exchanged views on the current situation,” reads the brief statement.
The committee said they planned to hold a press briefing soon to provide further details.
Solih and Nasheed, both of whom are from the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), and Yameen, who leads the People’s National Front (PNF), met on May 15 and agreed to form an alliance against President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
They appointed two representatives each to a special committee, which they said is tasked with discussing matters of national importance.
Nasheed appointed Eva Abdulla, the former deputy speaker of Parliament, and Fayyaz Ismail, who served as economic minister during Solih’s administration, and also as chairperson of the MDP.
Meanwhile, Solih appointed Ahmed Saleem (Salle), the former deputy speaker of Parliament, and Mohamed Rasheed Hussain (Bigey), who previously served as the MDP’s parliamentary group leader and currently serves as a member of the party’s national council.
Yameen appointed former Mohamed Maleeh Jamal, who served as technology minister during his administration, and Ismail Zariyand, who recently ran for Male’ City mayorship with his endorsement.
The committee held its first meeting on May 18, after which Fayyaz told reporters that they were highly confident that the alliance between the three former presidents will produce concrete results.
Solih, Nasheed and Yameen, once the greatest of political rivals, said that they decided to set aside their differences and form an alliance because they had enough of President Muizzu’s administration.
