A motion was submitted to the Parliament on Wednesday, calling for the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) and relevant government authorities to be held accountable for irregular disbursement of allowances to persons with disabilities.

In a letter addressed to Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Galolhu North MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudoo) pointed out that the constitution obliges the government to provide special assistance and protection to persons with disabilities.

The letter further stated that the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Provision of Financial Assistance Act guarantees every person with a disability the right to receive financial aid or an allowance from the state.

In spite of this, the lawmaker alleged that allowances distributed through the NSPA are not being deposited regularly on the designated payment dates.

Kudoo stressed that, for many persons with disabilities, the allowance serves as their primary source of income for medical expenses and essential daily necessities. He noted that delays in disbursement are creating considerable difficulties for beneficiaries and their families.

In the letter, the lawmaker called for two key measures: first, that the NSPA and relevant authorities be held accountable through the appropriate parliamentary committee; and second, that the government establish a permanent mechanism to ensure that allowances are disbursed regularly by a fixed deadline each month.
