Abdulla Mahzoom Majid, who is running for Male’ mayor on behalf of the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), has launched his manifesto, a detailed plan to transform the Maldivian capital into a better city.
A young man himself, Mahzoom’s manifesto includes multiple initiatives focused on the youth. It also highlights the pressing need to develop facilities in Male’ for the youth sports community to develop and horn their skills.
Key youth-centric initiatives in manifesto:
Mahzoom’s manifesto highlights the lack of facilities available for sports academies to develop and promote sports, and the challenges in having to pay huge fees to rent playing fields for a short period of time.
It highlights the need to revive the true spirit and culture of Male’, for the overall health, wellbeing, and prosperity of the city’s residents. He has therefore pledged to reopen the Alimas Carnival, establish cultural and talent development centers, and develop sports development centers.
Mahzoom’s manifesto also focuses on the biggest crisis facing Male’ – the shortage of housing. He said that the current application process for public housing schemes have major loopholes that allow people who have never lived in Male’ to submit fake documents and secure housing meant for residents of the city.
He believes that this can be resolved by migrating to a municipal automated selection system, creating a system where housing goes to those truly in need.
Other plans highlighted in the manifesto target addressing the city’s stray cat population, and making Male’ greener and livable.
Policies targeting Male’ streets:
The manifesto also includes plans to develop modern parking complexes, including one in a 36,000 square feet space at the Maafannu Cemetery, with parking lanes and between 106-120 car parking slots per floor.
Mahzoom’s manifesto includes plans to launch Male’ Portal, a digital portal where residents can apply for all services they could need from the city council, from birth to death, and to provide free WiFi in Male’ to access services from the city council and other state institutions.
He has also launched a campaign song highlighting the challenges facing Male’.
Mahzoom has stated that the biggest issue facing the Maldivian capital is not a lack of resources, but the weakening of the city’s management due to corruption.
He has promised to stamp out corruption and boost trade and standard of living for Male’ residents.
