A generator has broken down in L. Hithadhoo, an island with a population of about 1,000.
A resident told Sun the island has been experiencing intermittent power outages for the past two days.
When asked about the issue, the Hithadhoo Fenaka branch said the largest generator supplying electricity to the island had broken down.
The island currently uses a 600‑watt generator, a 400‑watt generator and a 350‑watt generator. The 600‑watt generator was damaged, and the remaining two cannot power the entire island at once.
“Right now we need about 600 kilowatts during the day. The 400‑kilowatt generator only makes 250, and the 350 makes 150. So power cannot be supplied continuously,” a Fenaka official said.
Fenaka said electricity is now being provided in two lanes, with power supplied to one lane and then switched to the other every hour.
The damaged generator is being repaired and is expected to be fixed sometime Monday evening.
L. Hithadhoo has a registered population of 1,345, though the council says around 1,000 people currently reside on the island.
Some residents have also voiced concerns on social media, with several reporting damage to expensive household electronics such as air‑conditioners.
