Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed said on Tuesday that it will not be too long now before PayPal services is enabled in the Maldives.
Responding to questions during a press briefing Tuesday morning, Saeed said Ooredoo Maldives is currently doing work on PayPal integration and testing.
“Next up will be the official launch, the commencement of use of this by Maldivians. My heart says it will not be too long now,” he said, without providing a specific date.
PayPal is an American multinational financial technology company that operates an online payments system in the majority of countries that support online money transfers. It serves as an electronic alternative to traditional paper methods such as checks and money orders.
Access to international online payments systems including PayPal was one of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s electoral pledges.
Ooredoo Maldives has previously said it plans to launch the service this year.
The company plans to integrate the global payment platform with Ooredoo Fintech’s m-Faisaa service. Once launched, Maldivian users will be able to link their PayPal and m-Faisaa wallets, enabling seamless cross-border transactions and global e-commerce participation.
