Khalid, an Indian national, arrived in the Maldives as a teacher in 2020 during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. He joined Maamendhoo School in Laamu Maamendhoo, as an Arabic language teacher, driven by the hope of building a secure future and realizing his personal dreams back in his homeland.
After achieving his personal goals and preparing for a stable life in India, Khalid requested to resign from his position three months ago. Yesterday marked the completion of that notice period and the day of his departure. However, leaving Maamendhoo was clearly not an easy for him; he departed with a heavy heart, shedding tears of both joy for his achievements and sorrow for leaving his students and island.
As news of Khalid’s resignation and his return to India spread, his students were visibly moved by sadness. Many could not hold back their tears, reflecting the deep bond they shared with their teacher.
To honor his departure, students and fellow teachers gathered at the island’s harbor to bid him a final farewell. At the harbor, as he said his goodbyes, students crowded around him, some extending pieces of paper and pens, eagerly seeking his autograph as a memento.
Overwhelmed by the circle of students and the immense love and respect they showered upon him, Khalid himself was moved to tears. He departed the island yesterday.
The Principal of Maamendhoo School, Aslam Muhtadh, spoke to Sun and described Khalid as an exemplary educator. He noted that Khalid was a man of high moral character and religious devotion, frequently seen at the local mosque.
Furthermore, Aslam highlighted Khalid’s professional excellence and his innovative teaching methodologies. "His greatest strength was his ability to connect with the students. He employed an engaging, student-centered learning style that made education entertaining and participatory," Aslam remarked.
In a time where occasional reports of mistreatment towards foreign teachers surface, this display of affection and respect from Maldivian students serves as a heartening example for the entire community.

This event stands as a testament to the fact that Maldivian students still deeply value the hard work of expatriate teachers. It highlights their gratitude for the knowledge shared and demonstrates the profound respect they hold for their mentors.
With a significant number of foreign teachers working across the Maldives, they continue to play a pivotal role in the academic journey of every Maldivian student. Some of these dedicated professionals have served in the country for over 30 years, becoming an integral part of the nation's educational fabric.
