Ahmed Shiyam.
The High Court on Thursday ordered the reinstatement of Ahmed Shiyam, who was serving as the commander of north police division when he was fired in 2014.
Shiyam was fired in May 2024 on allegations he abused his powers as the commander of the north police division.
In 2019, Shiyam filed an unlawful termination lawsuit against the police with the Civil Court. The court ruled against him in the case in 2020, following which he filed an appeal with the High Court in 2021.
The High Court delivered its verdict in the case on Thursday, after a five-year wait.
The-three judge bench that heard the case decided the state failed to present evidence to court proving the evidence the police disciplinary board based its decision on, something that the bench decided resulted in the state failing to establish that the board conducted a proper investigation before dismissing Shiyam.
The bench ruled in favor of Shiyam, ordering the police to reinstate Shiyam and provide him with the salaries and allowances he would have been due from the date of his termination.
The bench that heard the case was composed of Mohamed Shaneez Abdulla, Hassan Shafeeu, and Abdul Maniu Hussain.
Following his expulsion from the police force, Shiyam ventured into the restaurant business, running a number of popular restaurants in Male’. He also recently ventures into sports management.
