The contractor, Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), has announced the completion of repair works on the monument built in memory of the Great Tsunami of 2004,
The project to repair and renovate the deteriorated sections of the Tsunami Monument Park was formally awarded to MTCC on December 28 of last year.
In preparation for the redevelopment of the site, the Maldives Police Service issued a notice on February 9 instructing the removal of all vehicles parked in the vicinity of the Tsunami Monument.
MTCC, on Wednesday, announced that the renovation works were successfully completed on the April 2nd. The company also shared photographs on social media highlighting the upgraded area, including newly installed lighting and structural enhancements.

The renovation notably addressed significant wear and deterioration, including corroded sections of the monument itself, as well as damage to various parts of the surrounding park area.
Last year, December 26 marked the 21st anniversary of the Great Tsunami of 2004. The monument which was built in memory of the victims of the disaster and as a reminder of the unity showcased by Maldivians that day, was first placed at Lonuziyaaraikolhu area.
For the construction of the Sinamale’ Bridge during former president, the monument was moved near Vilimale’ Ferry Terminal, where it is now.
