MTCC completes asphalt works on Ameenee Magu after prolonged road damage

The second section of the Ameenee Magu redevelopment zone has now been asphalted.

Reconstruction of Ameenee Magu began after commuters repeatedly complained about severe asphalt damage near the Harbour Food Court area, which caused daily inconvenience.

The government-owned Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) said the re-paving works will improve mobility and provide smoother travel for residents of Malé City.

MTCC was awarded the Ameenee Magu renovation contract on June 15 last year. Physical works began in August, and asphalt laying started on September 19. MTCC completed the paving work earlier on Monday.

The Road Development Corporation (RDC), which the government is dissolving and merging under MTCC, was initially awarded the contract to repair the asphalt in the area. RDC had announced that work would begin on April 11.

When asked about the delay, RDC said in early June that the slowdown was due to changes requested by the Housing Ministry. A month later, the Housing Ministry reassigned the work to MTCC.

The last segment of Ameenee Magu was paved two years ago under the previous administration. The Planning Ministry of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s government awarded RDC an MVR 84.4 million contract for the works.

Since then, asphalt on both sides of Ameenee Magu deteriorated in multiple sections, causing hazards and discomfort for commuters. The public has raised concerns about the condition of the road on several occasions.
