Speaking with Sun, Huraa Council president Easa stated that, although the precise cause remains under investigation, preliminary observations indicate that the fire may have originated from a mobile phone connected to a charger in one of the bedrooms.
"It is suspected that the fire was triggered by a mobile phone left on charge in a room," Easa remarked.
He further specified that the injured individual is a 28-year-old mother of two who sustained burns to her fingers.
Easa clarified that the fire did not spread throughout the entire residence but was confined to one of the two bedrooms. He also commended the swift response of the local community, noting that the fire was successfully extinguished through the coordinated efforts of island residents.
He added that a comprehensive report on the incident cannot yet be completed, as the police have not arrived on the island to carry out a formal investigation.
The NDMA typically provides temporary shelter and essential provisions to individuals affected by such disasters. Relevant authorities are currently undertaking a thorough assessment to determine the full extent of the structural and financial damage.
This incident occurs amid a troubling increase in major fire-related accidents reported across various regions of the Maldives in recent times.
