Fire breaks out at accommodation block in Hulhumale’

A fire broke out on Saturday at an accommodation block for migrant workers in Hulhumale’.

According to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), firefighters from the Hulhumale’ Fire Station are responding to a fire that broke out at a previously inhabited accommodation block located in Hulhumale’ Phase III.

The fire was reported to the MNDF at around 05:12 pm.

The MNDF clarified that the building in question is currently not in use.

And at 05:45 pm, the MNDF announced that the fire had been brought under control.

The latest fire follows at least two similar incidents over the last three days, including a fire at the staffroom of the regional education center in GA. Vilingili on Thursday night, and one at a home in R. Alifushi on Friday night.

It also comes after a fire at an accommodation block for migrant workers in ADh. Dhigurah resulted in the death of five Bangladeshi workers, and seriously injured two others.

The case drew renewed scrutiny over lack of safety at accommodation blocks for migrant workers due to overcrowding.
