MVR 8 million was spent on putting up festive lights in Male’ and other Maldivian cities during Eid al-Fitr, according to the Local Government Ministry.

As a cost cutting measure to mitigate the potential economic impact from the US-Israeli war on Iran, the Maldivian government had decided to restrict Eid lights this year to limited locations in the cities.

State Minister at the Local Government Ministry, Ahmed Rasheed told Sun on Wednesday that it cost MVR 8 million to procure and install the lights.

He added that not all the lights were new, and that some were reused from last year.

The government had installed festive lights in 65 islands during Eid al-Fitr last year. Some MVR 28 million was spent on procuring lights for 36 of these islands.

The installation of festive lights for Eid is a practice introduced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
