Customers have begun raising concerns over unusual delays in receiving gas cylinders ordered from Maldives Gas, the state‑owned importer operated under STO.

A customer who placed an order at 12:29 on Sunday afternoon told Sun that the company informed him it could only issue 7‑kg cylinders, despite previously supplying 10‑kg bottles too. He said he was charged for the 7‑kg refill, but now nearly 10 hours later, the order had still not been delivered.

Another customer said he contacted the company’s call centre after placing an order for a household cylinder. He was told there were “difficulties in getting gas” and eventually received his order seven hours later.

Other sources also confirmed that gas deliveries are reaching households, but only after significant delays.

Employees of Maldives Gas, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the company has been running low on stock for several days and is currently supplying customers using gas purchased from Villa Company, which maintains a large storage facility in Thilafushi.

According to staff, Maldives Gas expects to replenish its own stock once a shipment arrives on February 15.

Sun attempted to obtain an official comment from Maldives Gas on Saturday and Sunday but was unable to reach the company.

Maldives Gas has faced corruption allegations in recent years. In April, the Anti‑Corruption Commission (ACC) confirmed it was investigating the loss of USD 250,000 in advance payments from an USD 800,000 gas shipment ordered in October 2024.

Last month, MDP MP for Vaikaradhoo, Hussain Ziyadh (Fittey), accused the company’s managing director, Abdulla Mohamed, of gambling, an allegation Abdulla denied.

Executives of the company have also faced corruption allegations during the previous MDP administration, and police are currently investigating a money‑laundering case linked to Maldives Gas.
