Prosecutors challenge dismissal of five bribery charges in High Court as Maumoon serves 12‑year term

Former managing director Maldive Gas Private Limited Abdulla Maumoon.

The prosecution has appealed the Criminal Court’s dismissal of five of the seven bribery charges raised against former Maldive Gas Managing Director Abdulla Maumoon, who is currently serving a 12‑year jail sentence for corruption.

Maumoon’s case was filed at the High Court last week, though the Court has not yet decided whether to accept it. According to the High Court’s website, the appeal was lodged on the 5th of this month.

Maumoon was accused of taking bribes in 2016 while serving as managing director of Maldives Gas during the former PPM administration. He faced seven counts of bribery.

He was convicted on two of the charges and sentenced to 12 years, nine months and 18 days in prison, while the Criminal Court ruled that the remaining five charges were not proven.

Maumoon’s lawyer has also appealed his earlier 12‑year sentence at the High Court.

Maumoon served as Managing Director of Maldive Gas from December 2013 to November 2018.
