Maldive Gas, the state-owned enterprise responsible for importing and distributing cooking gas in the Maldives, has increased the prices for refilling its 22kg and 45kg gas cylinders for commercial customers.

Responding to Sun’s queries on Wednesday, the company confirmed that the refill prices for these specific cylinder sizes have been revised upwards for commercial customers.

Under the new pricing structure, a 45kg cylinder, which previously cost MVR 1,170 to refill, is now priced at MVR 1,345.50. Similarly, the cost of refilling a 22kg cylinder has been raised to MVR 500, up from the previous rate of MVR 400.

Maldive Gas, a subsidiary of the State Trading Organization (STO), has not officially disclosed the reasons for these price adjustments.

Earlier in February, the company faced supply disruptions, which led to the temporary introduction of 7kg cylinders as a substitute for the standard 10kg units. While the issue was later resolved, it was accompanied by widespread public complaints over significant delays in delivery services. Normal operations for both Maldive Gas and Villa Gas resumed approximately two weeks later.

Additionally, the company has recently come under scrutiny amid allegations of corruption. In April, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) announced an investigation into a "missing" advance payment of approximately USD 250,000, which formed part of an USD 800,000 gas shipment ordered in October 2024. No further updates have been released regarding the progress or outcome of the investigation.
