President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced on Tuesday evening that a national initiative will be launched next year to revive the traditional values of respect and social harmony among Maldivians.

Speaking in Mahibadhoo, located in South Ari Atoll, the President said that the development of citizens’ mindset and behavior must progress in tandem with national governance.

He noted that mutual respect and close-knit community ties were once inherent to Maldivian society.

“In the past, Maldivians cared for one another with compassion and love,” he said, attributing the erosion of these values to a “political current” that entered the country years ago and contributed to a decline in respectful discourse.

The President expressed his desire to restore the kindness and civility that once defined the nation’s social fabric. He stressed that achieving this goal would require collective effort.

“The government wants to start a significant project next year, one to reinstate respect among the people. A Respect Campaign,” he declared.

Calling for broad collaboration, the President urged all relevant institutions, civil society organizations, and political parties to actively participate. He emphasized that while the government can initiate such a program, its success depends on the engagement of the entire population.

“I call on all the people, all relevant institutions, all NGOs, and all political parties to participate in this,” he said.

The President concluded by stating that true national progress can only be achieved through holistic development.
