Maldives and India discuss closer defense ties

Maldives and India on Monday engaged in discussions focused on strengthening the defense cooperation between the two neighboring countries.

The discussions took place in a meeting between Maldivian Defense Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon and an Indian delegation visiting Male’ for the annual defense cooperation dialogue between Maldives and India.

The delegation, headed by Indian Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, called on Ghassan at the Defense Ministry headquarters in Male’ on Monday.

Singh was accompanied by Indian High Commissioner G. Balasubramanian, along with senior officials from the Indian military and the External Affairs Ministry.

According to the Defense Ministry, discussions during the meeting centered on strengthening the defense cooperation between Maldives and India.

The Indian delegation arrived in Male’ for the sixth India-Maldives defense dialogue on Sunday. They were welcomed at a reception hosted by Maldives’ Chief of Defense Force Major General Ibrahim Hilmy in the evening.
