Govt announces MVR 100K cash prize, PhD scholarships for Quran competition toppers

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced on Wednesday that those who win first place in the various categories of the National Quran Competition will hereafter receive fully-funded scholarships to study up to PhD in any field of choice and from anywhere in the world.

In a post on X on Tuesday afternoon, President Muizzu highlighted on a promise he made last year to make the National Quran Competition the most expensive competition held in the Maldives.

“This is because I believe it is the beautiful recitation of the words of Almighty Allah that deserves the greatest encouragement and the greatest rewards,” he said.

He announced that starting this year, those who place first in the byheart category, by book category, and the hafiz category of the entire competition will receive a presidential scholarship for higher education programs up to PhD from any field of their choice and from anywhere in the world.

He also announced that they, along with the first-place winner of the institutions category, will also receive an MVR 100,000 cash prize, as part of the presidential prizes.

President Muizzu added that the prizes by the Islamic Ministry have also been increased, both in quantity and value.

He said that private parties will also get the chance to add more to the prize pool.

Over 1,000 individuals had participated in this year’s National Quran Competition.
