Employees of the Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) have not received promotions since 2019, the office revealed on Monday.
This arose as President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu recently declared a salary increase for all civil servants, council employees, and the judiciary, effective from November this year.
Public Prosecutor Ahmed Shafeeu, spokesperson for the Prosecutor's Office, stated on X that the salaries of PGO employees were last reviewed in 2014, meaning their compensation has not been updated for 11 years.
Shafeeu further explained that the PGO has been unable to promote its staff since 2019 due to the repeal of a relevant regulation. "The hope is that through the harmonization of the salaries of public servants, a salary appropriate to the work and the promotion that the employees deserve will be arranged," Shafeeu wrote.
Another spokesperson for the Prosecutor's Office said that the regulation was abolished by the then-prosecutor who deemed it unsatisfactory. However, no new regulation has been formulated to replace it since then.
According to the Prosecutor's Act, the Prosecutor General possesses the authority to recruit, appoint, train, promote, and dismiss new employees, subject to the budget approved by Parliament. The Act also mandates that regulations established under it must cover the employment, promotion, position, and service conditions of employees within the PGO's structure.
