Over 300 people jogged along the roads of Hulhumale’ on Saturday morning, in the Viksit Bharat Run 2025, one of the events organized by the Indian High Commission in Maldives to commemorate the birth of Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi.
The Viksit Bharat Run, or the Run to Serve the Nation, boasted an enthusiastic turnout of over 300 participants, from members of the Indian community to Maldivians, including several well-known public personalities such as Ahmed Adhuham, the lead singer of '2ofus'.
The run kicked off from in front of the Indian High Commission headquarters in Hulhumale’ Phase I and wrapped up at the harbor area in Hulhumale’ Phase II.
According to the Indian High Commission, the event was organized to promote fitness, community spirit, and a shared sense of progress.
“The presence of distinguished Maldivian personalities and officials alongside Indian diaspora members reflected the spirit of friendship and close people-to-people ties between India and the Maldives. Families, students, professionals, and senior citizens all participated with energy and enthusiasm, making the run a memorable occasion,” said the High Commission in a statement.
Indian High Commissioner G. Balasubramanian, who himself joined the run, thanked everyone who participated in the event.
The Viksit Bharat Run is not only about fitness but also about unity, inclusivity, and collective aspirations for a better future, he said.
The Indian High Commission expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the local community, volunteers, and the diaspora.
It also reiterated its commitment to organizing initiatives that encourage healthy living, unity, and mutual goodwill between India and Maldives.
The Indian High Commission has been organizing various events from September 15 to October 2, to commemorate the Gandhi’s birthday.
Born on October 2, 1869, Gandhi was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial activist, and political ethicist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British rule, earning him the title of ‘Father of the Nation.’
The Indian High Commission has been organizing various initiatives, including activities like tree plantation, blood donation, sports activities, quiz for school children, and meetings with Indian exporters to commemorate the occasion.
