Maldives and India have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide equipment for fitness centres in 42 islands, under the High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP).

The MoU was signed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam signed on behalf of the Government of Maldives, while India was represented by its High Commissioner G. Balasubramanian. Sports Minister Abdulla Rafiu signed on behalf of the implementing agency.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Iruthisham said the initiative is an important investment in improving the health and well-being of communities in rural islands. She said the project will encourage active lifestyles and expand access to quality health and recreation facilities.

Minister Rafiu said the fitness centres will create opportunities for people of all ages to participate in recreational activities, helping strengthen both physical health and community morale.

The establishment of fitness and recreation centres in all inhabited islands is part of President Mohamed Muizzu’s electoral pledge. The projects have been handed over to Fenaka Corporation and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) for implementation.
