Three inmates who assaulted a prison officer fined

Three inmates in Male’ Prison who attacked and injured a prison officer have been slapped with a fine.

The incident occurred in 2020 at Malé Prison, where three inmates assaulted and injured a prison officer, resulting in a head laceration. The individuals charged in relation to the case have been identified as:

  • Hassan Aleem Zuhury, Faana Villa, S. Hithadhoo
  • Ahmed Lujain, Huvandhumaa Villa, S. Meedhoo
  • Ahmed Zihan Ismail, Huvandhumaa Villa, S. Meedhoo

All three of them were charged with assault and unlawful physical contact.

According to the case report, the incident took place while the prison officer was escorting the inmates back to their cell after a phone call with their families.

All three inmates had pleaded not guilty in the case which concluded last week. However, other prison officers working in Maldives Correctional Service had testified against them.

Aleem was sentenced to prison for two months and 2 days in connection with the assault charge, which was converted to an MVR 14,400. He was fined by MVR 3,600 in connection with the unlawful physical contact charge.

Both Lujain and Zihan, who were found guilty of unlawful physical contact, were fined by MVR 7,200.
