Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has held ‘Run Reendhee’ event in commemoration of the party’s 20th anniversary with some 300 participants.
The event kicked off at 17:00pm this evening and was held at Central Park in Hulhumale’, and the surrounding road.
Maldives Police Service maintained security in the area during the event.
Senior party officials including MDP’s chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, parliamentary group leader Ibrahim Nazil participated in the event, which was also graced by former president Ibrahim Solih and former vice president Faisal Naseem.
Speaking during the event, which spanned some 50 minutes, Nazil said MDP remained intact over the past 20 years due to the dedication and efforts of its general members.
He expressed hope that the party will remain strong in the future, adding that he believes further progress can be achieved through the continued efforts of its general members.
Fayyaz, who also spoke at the event, affirmed that efforts would be made to win the upcoming local council elections and other polls as part of strengthening the MDP’s brand.
“Fostering political interest among today’s young generation is extremely important. This is because the people’s rights can be protected and upheld within a competitive political system,” he said.
Speaker further, Fayyaz appealed to party members’ commitment to its internal and external activities. He also appealed for party members’ participation in MDP leadership’s efforts to ensure and uphold the people’s power.
MDP had initially planned to hold ‘Run Reendhoo’ event on July 18th. The party was denied permit to hold the event by Housing Development Corporation (HDC), citing it was a political event. The party, in retaliation, announced its decision to hold the run at Male’ Majeedhee Magu on July 25th
The decision was reversed after the party was granted permit to hold the event at Central Park.
