Independence Day festivities kick off

The Maldives has officially begun its 60th Independence Day celebrations on Saturday afternoon, marking its diamond jubilee. Weeks of preparation by government and local communities aim for a memorable observance highlighting the nation's culture, achievements, and future aspirations, fostering national pride.

The event, which took place at 1615 hrs, was attended by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. High-ranking government officials were also present at the event.

The event kicked off with a parade, presented by the Maldives National Defense Force and Cadet Corps. Cultural performances the parade, while such performances had been held in M. Moolah and H.A. Kelaa.

Areas where the parade will stop for standstill performances in Male' city:

  • Starting from Velanaage curb to front of Dhivehi Bahuge Academy building

  • The junction of Majeedhee Magu and Chaandhanee Magu

  • In front of Million Bookshop on Majeedhee Magu in Maafannu ward

  • Northwest curb of MNDF Kalhuthuh'kalaa Barracks in Maafannu ward

The inauguration of the new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) will be commemorated by a six-minute fireworks display across 19 designated areas around the city, scheduled for Saturday evening at approximately 2030 hrs, as reported by the MNDF.

Additionally, parade floats are slated to tour Malé city on Sunday evening and Hulhumale on Monday evening.
