Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, the president of Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and parliamentary representative for Dh. Meedhoo, urged the Maldivian people to work together to overcome the economic challenges facing the country, as the country marks its 60th anniversary of independence.
In an address on Friday evening, Siyam conveyed greetings on occasion of Maldives’ 60th Independence Day, and paid tribute to the national heroes who made sacrifices to held regain and defend the country’s independence.
He paid special tribute to former Maldivian leader Ibrahim Nasir, who led negotiations with the British that led to Maldives regaining its independence on July 26, 1965.
The wisdom and national interest he showed leaves a lasting legacy, he said.
Siyam said that the 60th anniversary of Maldives’ independence comes as the country faces numerous challenges, some of which, if dealt with by prioritizing personal interests, could cost the country its hard-fought freedom.
“But it is regrettable that some of our leaders who have a responsibility to address this at the top level, fail to show the necessary level of wisdom and vision, and do not have the necessary level of spirit towards protecting the country’s independence and sovereignty,” he said.
Siyam said that the 60th Independence Day comes as the Maldives faces a dire economic situation.
“I find it imperative that everyone work together to boost the economy in order to overcome these hard times,” he said.
Siyam stressed that it is the people who fuel the economy.
“The secret to success lies in sincere effort,” he said.
