Interim order to temporarily halt appointment of ACP to Corrections

Former Assistant Commissioner of Prisons (ACP) Mohamed Asif: Civil Court has granted an interim order at Asif's request to temporarily halt a permanent appointment to his former post.

Civil Court issued an interim order last Thursday to temporarily halt the appointment of a new Assistant Commissioner of Prisons (ACP) to Maldives Correctional Service.

Mohamed Asif, who previously held the post, was dismissed on Wednesday after eight months in suspension paid suspension.

Asif was suspended on November 23, 2024, amid a case which allegedly saw MVR 200,000 from the account Prison Club, which was headed by Asif back then, transferred to various other accounts with links to him.

Asif requested an interim order from the Civil Court, in absentia of Maldives Correctional Service, seeking to prevent a permanent appointment to his former position. He further requested the court to instruct the authority to refrain from any action that could grant third-party rights over the position, to halt any such process if already underway, and to prevent any measures that could hinder the enforcement of a related court ruling.

According to Asif, he was dismissed from his position without a proper inquiry or the fairness required in such proceedings. As such, he expressed his intention to file a case against Corrections seeking reinstatement of his former post.

Civil Court judge Mariyam Waheed ordered Corrections to temporarily halt the appointment of ACP and halt any efforts underway in this trajectory.
