A fire broke out on Sunday at a government housing complex located in Hulhumale’ Phase I.
The fire broke out in the morning from a bedroom in a second-floor apartment in Flat 94, located near a children’s park in the vicinity of the Azeeza Mosque.
Firefighters from the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) managed to control the fire in under half an hour.
Firefighters at the scene told Sun that the three-room flat housed 11 expatriates. However, none of them were home when the fire broke out.
While the fire did not result in any injuries, it burnt the bedroom where the fire is believed to have originated from beyond use, and caused smoke damage to the rest of the flat.
The cause of the fire is unclear at this point.
The housing complex in question were built to provide housing for Maldivians in need of it under a social housing project. Though a violation of the lease agreement, many recipients sublet their flats.
