Ooredoo Maldives, which entered the Guinness Book of World Records for hosting the largest underwater panel discussion in May 2025, said this feat is more than a record but signifies the strength and perseverance of the network service provider.

The panel discussion was held near Baa atoll Fulhadhoo at five meters below sea level, which included:

  • Ahmed Shiyam, Minister of Fisheries
  • Khalid Al-Hamadi, CEO of Ooredoo Maldives
  • Brigadier General Mohamed Saleem, Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF)
  • Shabeen Ali, Ooredoo Maldives – Operations and Transmission
  • Afsheen Mohamed, Ooredoo Maldives – Operations and Transmission

The participants used special underwater communication gear for the discussion, allowing them to converse with each other. An underwater sound and video network was put to use during this panel discussion to assess its applicability and allowed the panelists to contact participants from all over the world.

Each panelist delivered their two-minute remarks seamlessly, with uninterrupted audio and video feed throughout the session according to Ooredoo Maldives.

Following the underwater panel discussion and world record attempt, Al-Hamadi emphasized that Ooredoo Maldives did not regard the event merely as a record-setting occasion, but as a demonstration of the telecom provider’s exceptional capabilities and network strength.

“The panel discussion with uninterrupted audio and video feed proved the strength of Ooredoo’s network,” Al-Hamadi commented.

Ooredoo Maldives’ Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), Hussain Niyaz further notified the record would contribute towards tourism growth as well and stressed the event was more than setting a record, but proof of technological advancement in the Maldives.

The achievement further signifies the progress made by Ooredoo Maldives in the digital world.
